Tweet The annual egg drop, a scouting highlight observed each year by Cub Scout Troop 3294 at Highlands, had a special twist this year with the help of firefighters from CFD2. The idea is for each scout to package an egg to protect it from a high drop – usually from the roof of the [...]

Tweet They say there’s nothing harder than herding cats. Tell that to the people charged with herding a bunch of mini-moose. Prairie Village’s Blue Moose Soccer Club kicked off its annual “Mini-Moose” spring sessions Sunday, with dozens of 3 to 6 year olds getting their first taste of the world’s most popular sport. After being [...]

Tweet A slippery snowfall on Dec. 31 may have been a nightmare for roadcrews and New Year’s Eve revelers, but it proved a pleasant diversion for groups of children enjoying their final days of winter break. Dozens of kids and parents braved the elements Monday and Tuesday to hit the locally semi-famous sledding hill above [...]

Tweet By Mary Jo Draper, MidtownKCPost.com If Prairie Village lacks major art museums, it is a great place for small, one person shows. Take, for example, the exhibit of needlework by Julie Tenenbaum — a Fairway native and SM East grad — is displaying at the Prairie Village Starbucks this month. A few years ago, [...]

Tweet Back for the its 11th year, the Prairie Village Earth Fair came to SM East Saturday, providing environmentally focused fun for young and old.

Tweet So, no, that heavy, slushy stuff that covered Kansas City yesterday wasn’t the ideal medium for downhill enthusiasts. But when you’re having a winter like we are, you take what you can get. The Vanice family was among those who bundled up and braved the SM East sledding hill yesterday for a bit of [...]

Tweet I am red with envy, if that’s possible, about PV resident Doug Hudson’s mad photography skills. Doug sent the beautiful shot above along yesterday after our call for fall foliage pictures, and when we asked him where it was shot (around 78th and Nall Avenue, he thinks) he let us know he’s been keeping [...]

More fall colors photos

Tweet Big thanks to reader Karen Chapman for sending along a few more pics of great fall color throughout the area. If you’ve got some especially beautiful fall foliage in your neighborhood, snap a shot and send it our way.

Around town: Dog days of summer

Tweet Which one of these is the hot dog?!?!?!?!?!?!?: Hahahahahahahahahahaha! Ha! Oh, man. I’ve been working on that one all day. Anyway, it was, indeed, quite warm last night at the Village Shops’ Dog Days of Summer event. Lots of cute pups from the SPCA were hanging around outside Euston Hardware: And a number of [...]

Tweet Great weather meant a great turnout at this year’s VillageFest — and plenty of smiles on local kids’ faces: Lots more photos after the jump.

Around town: Birds of wet feathers

Tweet Reader Laura M. sent along this photo of a ducky that decided to take a break in her backyard pool: We figured it presented us a chance to pass along this shot of a yellow-shafted Northern Flicker that was trying (unsuccessfully) to avoid the rain in our backyard this afternoon:

Tweet So, it wasn’t officially the third Thursday of the month. But the merchants along Tomahawk Road at the Village Shops kicked off their monthly spring and summer event series last night anyway (they chose the second Thursday of the month so as not to create a conflict with the SM East graduation next week). [...]

Tweet Tavern in the Village hosted a Kentucky Derby watching party Saturday, with hats galore: And then it was time for the race. Patrons were glued to the televisions above the bar as longshot Animal Kingdom made his come-from-behind run to victory:

Tweet It was a beautiful morning for the annual Corinth Dragon Dash 5K and 1 mile run. The real runners led off the pack at the 7:45 a.m. start: Followed by the recreational runners, including this guy: Hey! I’ve been looking for him! The one-milers took off a few minutes later, with lots of Corinth [...]

Around town: Jazzree at US Bank

Tweet Fundraising efforts for the second annual Prairie Village Jazz Festival officially got under way last night with Jazzree, a silent auction and music event at the US Bank branch at the Village Shops. Patrons bid on 18 silent auction items, and enjoyed wine and appetizers.

Tweet Between the egg hunt, rubber ducky rivier, Easter bunny and miniature train, it’s probably safe to say there was plenty to keep families entertained at this year’s Prairie Baptist Eggstravaganza. The annual event is held at Porter Park the Saturday before Easter. More photos after the jump.

Tweet It was a chillier start to the day than might have been ideal, but by the time the Steps for the Cure 5K had come to a close Saturday morning, the sun was peaking through and making for an excellent afternoon for the Brighton Gardens car show: A couple more shots after the jump.

Tweet Okay, so technically it’s not in Prairie Village, Fairway or Mission Hills. But we couldn’t resist the opportunity to go get some pictures of the first Farmers Market of the season in downtown Overland Park. There weren’t a ton of vendors out, but things will pick up over the coming weeks. (Also, having a [...]

Tweet Footballs, frisbees and furry friends got the chance to see some fresh air Sunday at Franklin Park, as temperatures topped 70 degrees. More pics of Prairie Villagers (and their pups) having some springtime fun after the jump.

Tweet Johnny’s at Corinth Square was even crimsonier and bluer than normal last night, as dozens of Jayhawks fans gathered to watch their team’s first game of the NCAA tournament against Boston University. Though the first half was considerably tighter than Kansas fans would have preferred, a re-composed Jayhawks squad pulled away in the second [...]
