Garrett served as an assistant head coach last season for the Lancers under Chris Kliewer, who was let go in June in a move that surprised many. Kliewer led the Lancers to three titles in his four years with the club. The Lancers fell in the semi-final game of this year’s Lacrosse Association of Greater Kansas City playoffs.
A native of Purcellville, Va., Garrett was a four-year player at Washington and Lee. After graduating, he moved to Kansas City for a job with Cerner.
Garrett will be assisted by Brenden Surface, a former Rockhurst High School player, and Dan Connelly, a vascular surgeon who played at the college level with the Air Force Academy. Both Surface and Connelly were assistants on last year’s squad as well.
The board also announced the coaches for its sub-varsity programs. William Bolen and Adam Ligon will coach the junior varsity team; and Jimmy Goetz and Jon Lecuyer were selected to coach the freshman team provided enough players express interest.
Because lacrosse is a club sport not administered by the Shawnee Mission School District, the Lancer lacrosse program is run by a six-member board.
