The Board of Directors of Consolidated Fire District No. 2 announced Monday that they have appointed current Battalion Chief Tony Lopez as retired Chief Gary Lamons’ replacement.
Lopez has been in the fire service for 29 years, serving five years in Independence, Mo. before joining CFD No. 2. He will begin his duties as chief Monday, Aug. 4.
Lopez said Monday he has a vision for the department that includes economizing service delivery and reducing costs while also improving the department’s integration with the community.
“There are a still a lot of people who don’t know we serve eight cities in northeast Johnson County,” he said. “I want to change that and get our brand out there more. I want us to be out in the community more.”
Additionally, he said he wants to seek national accreditation for the department.
Lopez is a native of Kansas City, Mo., who said he always dreamed of being a firefighter as a child. He and his wife current live in Blue Springs, Mo., but Lopez says he is considering a move closer to northeast Johnson County.
“I’ve always thought it was important for the fire chief to be close to things,” he said.
