Just months after Entercom agreed to remove a controversial perimeter fence around its property in the heart of Westwood, the company was back with a request that drew comments from some of its neighbors.
The Westwood Board of Zoning Appeals this week approved a variance for the Entercom land at 50th and Belinder to allow permanent “No Trespassing” signs to be placed in several locations around the nearly eight-acre property. The approval came on a split vote of the board and after concern expressed by some neighbors about signage.
Just this year the company agreed to remove a perimeter chain link fence topped with barbed wire that had brought multiple complaints from the neighborhood during Entercom’s bid to have its special use permit renewed to operate its broadcasting towers in Westwood. The building on the property is no longer staffed and the maintenance on the building and property had been a point of contention with the neighborhood. Broadcast towers have been on the property since the 1930s, before Westwood was incorporated as a city.
The Entercom property has a large section of open land and the company does not want the public using it for recreational purposes. In Westwood, signs are generally not allowed on residentially zoned property except on a temporary basis. Two older signs have been on the property for some years and were not affected by the variance request. The Entercom request was to install five new permanent signs around the perimeter of the property.
