Memorial services for Clay Miller, the Kansas City, Mo., native who worked as a lifeguard at the Paul Henson YMCA in Prairie Village killed in a rural Missouri car wreck July 5, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, July 11, at St. Peter’s Church (6415 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Mo.)
Lifeguards from neighboring YMCA’s have offered to cover the shifts of those guards slated to work at the Paul Henson branch to allow them to attend the service. Many of Miller’s lifeguard colleagues are planning to wear their lifeguard shirts to the ceremony.
Miller attended St. Peter’s Grade School before moving to Lincoln College Prep Academy for high school. According to his obituary, he was planning to attend an art school and to study writing and philosophy after taking a gap year to volunteer in Argentina.
A Fairway Parks and Recreation staff member who was close friends with the boys involved in the accident has also planned a vigil to honor Mark Harken on Sunday. The vigil will be from 7-9 p.m. at Peterson Park, 6136 Mission Road. Fairway Parks and Recreation director Nathan Nogelmeier said the group plans to have paper for people to write notes to Mark, and then a fire for them to toss the notes into.
