North Leawood resident Spencer Collins and his family appear very likely to get the permission they need this evening to finally install the Little Free Library in their front yard that has sparked a national outcry.
The Leawood Governing Body will convene Monday at 7:30 p.m. for the first time since news broke that Leawood had threatened the Collins family with a fine if they didn’t remove their Little Free Library, and one of the first items on the agenda is a new ordinance that would place a temporary moratorium on enforcement of the Leawood Development Ordinance as it pertains to “containers designed to hold books and other media to be shared by members of the community.” Following a roll call vote on that item will be a broader discussion on the prohibition of detached structures in residential front yards.
In the two and a half weeks since the story broke, the plight of the Collins family has prompted cries of indignation from across the county – and even internationally. The national media attention is continuing right up through today’s council meeting. Brian and Spencer Collins made an appearance Friday on The Lead with Jake Tapper. See the clip below.
The pair are also slated to appear today on Here and Now with Robin Young, the national radio show produced out of WBUR in Boston that airs locally on KCUR from noon to 2 p.m.
