SM East swim relay team earns All-American status. SM East’s 200 yard freestyle relay team, made up of Patrick Hornung, Peter Milledge, Cooper Johnson and Zack Holbrook, earned All-American status from the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. The top 100 performances in each event earn the honor each year. Over the course of the season, the team broke the Sunflower League record in the 200 freestyle relay and posted the second fastest time in state history. The last time SM East had an All-American relay team was 2010. The program has had seven relay teams and six individuals earn All-American status since 2005.
Johnson County cities work to adapt to open carry law. The Kansas City Star ran a lengthy piece Monday outlining how Johnson County cities are responding to the changes in Kansas law that now make it legal to openly carry firearms in public spaces. Prairie Village Police Capt. Tim Schwarzkopf said in the piece that the law poses a challenge to law enforcement officer trying to determine whether a gun is a threat. “It’s hard to know what a person is going to do because you can’t get into their head,” he said. Johnson County Open Carry group planning “open carry picnic” at Harmon Park. KSHB reports that Johnson County Open Carry, the group associated with a lawsuit against Prairie Village’s previous ban on openly carried weapons, plans to celebrate the new state law with an “open carry picnic” at Harmon Park in Prairie Village in late July. Prairie Village resident named president-elect of Kansas Association for Justice. Prairie Village resident Tim Pickell was recently selected as the president elect of the Kansas Association for Justice. The statewide organization focuses on promoting individual and corporate responsibility and accountability, the right to trial by jury, independence of the judiciary and high standards of ethics.
