The Prairie Village City Council on Monday voted to repeal certain provisions of its city code regulating how weapons can be carried in the city ahead of the enactment date of HB 2857, a state bill that strips cities of the right to ban the open carrying of guns, among other things. The council acted to remove the parts of the city code that would have been unenforceable when HB 2857 goes into effect July 1.
The new law means that it will be legal to openly carry a gun or large knife on any public property in Prairie Village — including parks and the municipal grounds.
What was your reaction to this development? Did you think the state overstepped its bounds with HB 2578? Do you think Prairie Village should have tried to mount a legal fight to keep its open carry ban on the books and enforceable?
