This lovely spring weather has people all over northeast Johnson County getting out and about. And given the upcoming city budgeting process that will be taking place across the area, we thought we might try to get a sense of where Prairie Village residents in particular might be interested in seeing the city invest in improvements that would make getting out of doors all the more appealing.
Increasing park space, building a trail system and adding bike lanes were all identified as priorities for the city in its 2009 Village Vision Master Plan — but the City Council has made little progress on any of those fronts. The trails system hit a major snag in 2012 when the council voted down a measure to build a trail from Franklin Park to Nall Avenue. The city still lags in the prevalence of bike-friendly roads, as this interactive map from the Mid-America Regional Council illustrates. And the city has added no new green space since Village Vision’s adoption.
Are these issues important to you? Why or why not? Among new park space, better trails and more bike lines, do you see one as a bigger priority than another? Why? Would you support the city investing in moving forward on any of these fronts?
