Laura McConwell’s 12-year tenure as mayor of Mission came to an end Wednesday night with a standing ovation from the packed council chambers and praise from councilors, citizens and her successor for her accomplishments.
McConwell opened Wednesday night’s council session, but it was adjourned by Mission’s new mayor, Steve Schowengerdt, as the name plates were switched out on the council dais. It also was the last meeting for councilors Lawrence Andre and Will Vandenberg. Andre chose not to run for another term and was replaced by Steven Lucas who won a contested election against Jay Meyer. Vandenberg lost his seat to Arcie Rothrock.
Debbie Kring and Suzie Gibbs, both incumbents, were sworn in for new terms as well. Kring was unopposed and Gibbs defeated Bill Nichols for another four-year term.
Schowengerdt said McConwell always made people who appeared before the council feel welcome. One resident said McConwell “has always been dedicated to this city and what it can be.”
