Fairway resident and Story restaurant proprietor Carl Thorne-Thomsen has been named Food & Wine magazine’s “People’s Best New Chef” for 2014.
Thorne-Thomsen was the Midwest regional winner in the competition last year, but this year he took the whole thing, beating out 99 renowned chefs from across the country. Food & Wine selects the “People’s Best” winners based on online voting from readers.
“It’s pretty amazing to be in Prairie Village, Kansas, and beat out guys from New York and Los Angeles and other great food cities,” Thorne-Thomsen said. “The support we get at Story from people in the immediate neighborhoods and Kansas City as a whole is incredible. I’m lucky to work here.”
Thorne-Thomsen started out as a writer before catching the culinary bug, and working his way up through the ranks at some of the Kansas City area’s most prominent kitchens, including 40 Sardines, Michael Smith and Extra Virgin before launching his own restaurant at The Village Shops in 2011.
As part of the honor, Thorne-Thomsen will be featured in the July 2014 issue of the magazine.
