SM East’s basketball teams may have failed to make the state tournament this year, but three of their alums are wrapping up impressing seasons at the college level.
2010 SM East graduate Alison Stephens and her teammates on the DePauw University team won the first two rounds of the NCAA Division 3 women’s basketball tournament last weekend. The Tigers lost just one game this regular season after winning the national championship and going undefeated at 34-0 last year. Stephens, whose parents are Betsy Stephens and Charlie Vasey of Prairie Village and Craig Stephens of Brookside, pulled down a career high 16 rebounds Saturday in the Tigers’ win over Transylvania. The Tigers face Carthage Friday.
2013 Lancer grad Zach Schneider enjoyed an impressive freshman season playing for the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats, who lost in the semi-finals of the MIAA tournament in Kansas City last weekend. Schneider factored in heavily to the Bearcats offense from the start of the year, and earned MIAA Freshman of the Year honors. He averaged 7.5 points a game.
