The Lancers couldn’t find enough magic to repeat the come-from-behind win that propelled them over Blue Valley High Thursday and into Saturday’s substate final against the defending state champion Blue Valley Northwest Huskies.
The Lancers got off to a fast start Saturday, with a Joey Wentz layup and a Colin Burns three-pointer pushing them to an early 5-0 lead. But BV Northwest quickly settled down and used a buzzer-beating layup at the end of the first quarter to take a 13-9 lead. The Lancers would never lead again, unable as they were to contain the speedy play of Huskies guards Clay Custer and Vince Fritz. David Salach, the Huskies’ 6’6″ forward, led BV Northwest in scoring with 20. Custer scored 15, with eight of his points coming from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. The victory marked BV Northwest fifth straight substate championship.
Burns led the Lancers’ offense with 15 points, include three three-pointers. Sophomore Joey Wentz scored 12 and junior Lucas Jones scored nine.
Saturday’s contest was the last in a Lancers uniform for seniors Luke Haverty, John Sears, Christian Blessen, Matt Nestler and Burns. SM East finished the season as the ninth ranked 6A team in the state by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association and with a 15-7 record.
