During winter sports season, basketball and swimming tend to get a lot of traction with SM East athletics fans. But 2013-14 has been an amazing year for one member of the Lancers’ bowling team, as well — and he’s looking to make it even more so.
Junior Mike Thibodeau set a new school record by bowling 695 in a three-game series during the Lancers second meet of the year.
“After the second game, I started thinking, I’m rolling really well right now,” Thibodeau recalls. “I was thinking I could have a chance to get to 700.”
He missed that mark by a bit. But when he finished his third game and went to speak with his coach, Thibodeau learned he’d bested the previous school record by a few pins.
“I actually thought the school record was 696 and that I’d missed it by a pin,” he said. “My teammates were psyched.”
Thibodeau now has his sights set on a qualifying for state, a feat he hasn’t yet achieved in his high school career. He said his performances dipped in the weeks after the record-breaking performance, but that after working with his father — who is the team coach at Olathe East — he appeared to be back in good form.
“Bowling’s a really serious thing for me,” he said. “I’ve been raised bowling all my life.
