SM East’s swimming team has yet another story to add to its storied history.
The Lancers took their eleventh straight Sunflower League title this weekend and set a new league record in the process. With record-breaking showings in both individual and relay events, the Lancers took the league meet with 409 team points, beating the previous record by 50 points.
It was an especially big day for senior Benjamin Schmatz, who was part of three record-breaking performances. Schmatz started the day with a 1:56.85 in the 200 meter individual medley, earning the team’s first victory. He then put in a 58.08 performance in the 100 meter breaststroke, setting a new school record.
Peter Milledge helped the Lancers off to their excellent start with a 50 meter freestyle time of 21.53 seconds, setting a new Sunflower League record. Two SM East relay teams were dominant as well. Milledge and Schmatz along with Zach Holbrook and Patrick Hornung set a Sunflower League record in the 400 meter freestyle relay at 3:14.76. And Milledge, Hornung, Holbrook and Cooper Johnson set a new league record in the 200 meter freestyle relay at 1:26.72.
The Lancers placed individuals or teams among the top three performers in ten of 12 events.
Olathe East finished second. Shawnee Mission North finished sixth among the 12 teams competing.
SM East will try to keep its momentum going when the team competes for a state title Feb. 21 and 22 in Topeka.
