Westwood police issued a release Wednesday evening with details of a single car accident on Mission Road involving a stolen vehicle that prompted a short lockdown at Westwood View Elementary this afternoon:
At approximately 2:28 p.m. on Wednesday, 1/29/14, a 2002 gray Acura passed a Fairway officer at a high speed eastbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway. The officer attempted to catch up to the vehicle. The vehicle became involved in a one car accident when it struck and pole and curb in the 5100 block of Mission Road.
The two occupants of the vehicle fled the scene on foot. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Mission this morning at approximately 7:39 a.m.
By 2:45 p.m. a 21 year old female who had been in the car had been contacted by law enforcement. She was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police officers from several agencies responded to area in an effort to locate the second person from the car; reportedly a Hispanic male in his 30’s wearing a gray sweatshirt and carrying a backpack. Eventually a subject matching that description was seen by an officer in the area of 50th Street and Stateline Road. The subject ran westbound into some backyards. A perimeter was established, an OPPD police canine was used and a KCMO PD helicopter was used in an effort to find the subject, but he could not be located.
As a precaution, Westview elementary was put on lockdown for a short while. The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information should call 913-782-0720 or 816-474-TIPS.
When the car was originally stolen it had been left running and unattended to warm up. This case is a good reminder that even on these cold winter days vehicles should never be left running and unattended.
