The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department is warning about a new scam where people identify themselves as sheriff’s deputies to solicit money.
Here is the description of the scam from the sheriff’s department:
“The scam involves a person calling and identifying themselves as an employee with the sheriff’s office. Scammers have gone so far as to give a badge number and/or serial number. The caller tells the potential victim they have a warrant because they failed to appear in court for a Johnson County traffic camera citation. The callers have also instructed the potential victims that they need to purchase a Green Dot Money pack to send to them.”
The department became aware of the scam after getting phone calls from Johnson County residents who had been intended victims. The sheriff’s office procedure for contacting people about warrants does not include a demand for immediate bond payment, according to the department.
