Mission is a city with some considerable infrastructure projects in its future and it now has a new public works director who says he is ready for the challenge. John Belger had his appointment to the position ratified by the city council this week.
Belger has served as the city’s public works superintendent since July 2010. Belger sees the promotion “as an opportunity to move this city forward,” especially in light of the “unique challenges” the city faces. Referring to the Johnson Drive project that will extend through next summer, Belger says it is not often you “completely rebuild the heart of your city.”
He said the department has come a long way in recent years, becoming more proactive, citing its street and sign programs. “We do not want to wait for complaints to come in,” Belger says. “We’ve got the momentum moving in the right direction.”
Belger has shared in the department’s management responsibilities the last couple of years. Before coming to Mission, he worked for a general contractor that did road, bridge, storm and sanitary sewer projects mainly in northeast Johnson County. He has a degree in construction management from the University of Central Missouri.
