You can now get a driver’s license in the evening at the Mission office. No more getting up early or leaving work to take care of that chore.
The Mission office will now be open from 7 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Friday. Driving tests will stop at 5 p.m., but all other services, including renewals and written tests will be available in the evening.
The pilot project of expanded evening hours will run through next May and could be expanded to other busy offices if it is popular. The pilot also is being conducted at the Olathe office.
Year-round Monday hours were started this fall at the state’s busiest offices after a pilot that included the Mission office. Wait times during the summer still ran hours-long at the Mission branch. The usual rush of teenagers was complicated by people applying for concealed carry firearms permits at the offices. The four-day week for the offices dated to 1984.
The late evening hours pilot for Mission had been originally announced in August by the department of revenue with the pilot then projected to start in the fall.
The Mission office is located between Johnson Drive and Martway in the Mission West shopping center. The expanded hours have resulted in additional staff being hired as well.
