An explosion at the Metcalf 56 apartment complex at 56th Street and Floyd in Overland Park this afternoon sparked a massive fire that has damaged as many as 12 apartments and left four people with injuries.
Residents say they heard an explosion around 12:30 p.m. and went out to see flames coming from the building, with some reporting an odd odor following the explosion. One occupant of a nearby apartment said she could feel the ground shake as the explosion erupted.
One person was critically burned in the incident and has been taken to The University of Kansas Hospital for treatment. Three others, including an Overland Park police officer, suffered injuries from smoke inhalation, but were treated on the scene.
Crews from the Overland Park Fire Department, the Merriam Fire Department, the Shawnee Fire Department and Consolidated Fire Department No. 2 responded to the three-alarm blaze. The apartment complex is just a few blocks directly north of SM North High School and immediately west of Metcalf Avenue.
