A new addition to the Johnson Drive business district in downtown Mission, Mélange dance ballroom and event space, will have its grand opening celebration Saturday night. The free event is open to the public. From 6 to 10 p.m. you can take part in a free group dance lesson, meet dance instructors watch dance performances – and there will be food and drink.
Mélange is not just about dancing, though. It is also an event space that can be rented for private parties and receptions. The dance floor area is 3,500 square feet and can be divided into two spaces.
The owners, Clark and Jaye Davis met on the dance floor. Their daughter, Tara, who manages Mélange, said they later decided they needed a hobby and took up ballroom dancing. They were dancing at Ballroom Unlimited in Mission which was outgrowing its space when the Johnson Drive property became available. Now Ballroom Unlimited uses the Mélange space as its home studio.
After the purchase, they lured Tara back from New Zealand, where she was living and working, to run the business as the studio and event director. Clark Davis is an attorney who practices in Olathe.
Ten instructors operate group and private lessons from Mélange. The space can be divided so both group and private lessons are going on at the same time. The current group lesson schedule includes Waltz Tuesdays, Tango Wednesdays, Rumba Thursdays and Cha Cha Fridays. Every second Friday is the Mélange Dance Party.
Saturdays are host to Zumba, Ballet for Ballroom, advanced workshops and Saturday West Coast Swing. While dancing is a big focus of the business, renting the event space is the other part. With new lighting and sound system, the 4,500 square feet include a kitchen area, moveable granite-top bars, a bridal party room and separate entrance for bridal parties.
Mélange is at 5636 Johnson Drive. Full information about its space, rental and dance schedules can be found here.
