Shawnee Mission East’s defense gave up the first points of Friday’s football game against Lawrence — and then didn’t give up any more.
After allowing a 40-yard Lawrence field goal in the first quarter, the Lancers’ superior offensive and defensive lines took over, stifling the Lions’ attack and giving SM East quarterback Christian Blessen plenty of room to operate on the way to a 26-3 win.
Blessen punched in the Lancers’ first and second touchdowns on the night with a 56-yard run in the first quarter and a 5-yard run in the second, putting the Lancers up 12-3 (both extra point attempts failed).
Blessen then took to the air for touchdowns three and four on the night, finding Mitchell Tyler with four minutes left in the half, and then sneaking in one more passing score to Alec Dean with just :04 before the intermission.
The Lancers’ got sloppy in the second half, though, coughing up three fumbles that the Lions recovered. But their offensive dominance in quarters one and two combined with a sturdy defense throughout the night was enough for a solid victory — and a boost of confidence as the team looks to next week’s match against Olathe Northwest and former SM East coach Chip Sherman.
That game will be played at 7 p.m. next Friday, Sept. 20, at SM North stadium – with Lancer Day Parade festivities earlier in the day. Get pumped, SM East nation.
