It’s hard to imagine a much better start to the dawn of the Dustin Delaney era than the performance the Lancers put on Friday.
Any questions about whether Delaney’s squad would stumble making the transition from Chip Sherman’s spread offense to Delaney’s wishbone attack were quickly put to rest as the Lancers racked up 21 points in the first half on their way to a 34-0 win at Leavenworth. Luke Taylor accounted for two touchdowns on the night, as did Mitch Tyler, who had 101 receiving yards. Quarterback Christian Blessen notched a TD of his own on a second half keeper, and passed for 92 yards.

Fortunes weren’t as good for SM North’s team, which opened its season and the start of the Don Simmons’ coaching tenure with a tough road game against a very good Lawrence Free State team. SM North was scoreless well into the second half before finally getting on the board on the way to a 47-7 loss.
SM East will hit the road again next Friday to face a Lawrence team that will be hungry after a season-opening 20-33 loss to Olathe South. SM North will face Leavenworth at Leavenworth.
