Google Fiber’s coming!…to Olathe. Sigh
Great news everyone! Google Fiber is expanding in Johnson County — and hopping right over Mission, Prairie Village, and several other municipalities contiguous to its already announce rollout areas all the way to Olathe!
Olathe, Kan.! Which is, like, a full marathon’s distance away from downtown Kansas City!
Oh, well. Google made the announcement on its blog Tuesday night moments after the Olathe City Council approved an agreement to bring the high-speed Internet and television service there.
“Olathe has become one of the fastest-growing cities in Kansas and has attracted an influx of new businesses and residents,” wrote Fiber community manager Rachel Hack on the blog. “They’ve all noticed what a great community Olathe is, and so have we. We think that Fiber and widespread Internet access will help to create jobs, grow local businesses, and make Olathe even stronger as it grows.”
The announcement notes that the addition of Olathe will not impact the already-announced future inclusion of the northeast Johnson County cities of Westwood, Westwood Hills and Mission Woods. No “pre-registration rally” date has been announced for those cities.
Northeast Johnson County Chamber of Commerce president Deb Settle told the Prairie Village City Council on Monday that a Google Fiber representative would be speaking at a chamber event in the coming months.
