Watch out, Wichita! Lancer boys headed to state for first time since 2009
Low-seeded Blue Valley High School slipped past SM Northwest by one point in the first round of sub-state play Wednesday.
But their dreams of another upset were quickly dashed on the Lancers’ home court Friday, where an SM East squad playing some of its best basketball of the year easily kept the Tigers at bay. A 59-38 victory earned the Lancers a sub-state title and their first trip to the state tournament since 2009.
“It’s a great feeling — a really great feeling,” said SM East coach Shawn Hair. “These kids have worked so hard.”
The Lancer offense was again propelled by their tall triumvirate: Zach Schneider, 15 points, Vance Wentz, 18 points, and Lucas Jones, 17 points. (And for the second game in a row, Jones managed to work a dunk into his scoring output).
With their victory Friday, the 2012-13 Lancers have now won 20 games — becoming only the second team in school history win as many. The 2006-2007 squad, also coached by Hair, went 20-2 overall and lost in the regional final. A victory Wednesday in the first round of state tournament play make this year’s team the best in school history.
The Lancers drew the third seed overall in the state tournament, and will face off against six seed Wichita East (15-7) at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. The tournament is being held on the campus of Wichita State University in the Charles Koch Area.
