Mission’s McConwell honored for ‘Smart Growth’ leadership
Mission Mayor Laura McConwell has picked up a second metro leadership award in as many weeks. McConwell was honored with the 2013 Leadership Award by Smart Growth America, which held a national conference in Kansas City last week.
McConwell and Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads were recognized for the strategies their cities are using “to enhance the quality of life for residents, invest in infrastructure and boost economic competitiveness.” The awards were presented Friday during the ‘New Partners for Smart Growth’ conference.
“Mayor Rhoads and Mayor McConwell have made significant strides in partnership with their cities,” said Geoffrey Anderson, president and CEO of Smart Growth America. “These leaders are stellar examples of how better development strategies can improve communities and economies. It takes thoughtful, proactive planning, and both towns are laying the groundwork for future success.”
In Mission, Smart Growth America highlighted McConwell’s leadership in the use of form-based codes to tackle community development issues, including parking, support of investment in public transportation and green infrastructure and emphasis on existing neighborhoods. The organization also recognized Mission’s mixed-use transit-oriented Gateway development and the infill development of Mission Square independent housing for seniors next to Sylvester Powell Community Center.
Both McConwell and Roads serve on the Mid-America Regional Council board of directors. McConwell was recently named a recipient of Kansas City Business Magazine’s 2013 Kansas City Influential Women Awards.
