Martway rehab ready to start next week in Mission

The first of two big construction projects on downtown Mission streets is set to start in the next few days. Martway is the first to get started on the rehab project, but Johnson Drive also is scheduled for major work in 2014.

The Martway project will involve street closures periodically from February through fall. The first step in the Martway reconstruction involves replacing the bridge under the intersection at Martway and Woodson which will close the intersection for about 45 days, probably starting Feb. 11, depending on weather.

The revamping of Martway will run from Broadmoor to Woodson Streets.

The work also includes full depth street replacement between Woodson and Lamar, new surface asphalt between Lamar and Broadmoor, a new traffic signal at Martway and Broadmoor, removal of the traffic signal at Martway and Woodson, installation of new LED street lights from Broadmoor to Woodson and sidewalk, stormwater and other infrastructure improvements.

The second phase is the rehab from Lamar to Woodson, which could close the street to through traffic.

Justin Pregont, Mission’s Public Works Project Manager, said work starting next Monday will be to prepare a pedestrian detour on 61st Street. While the street will be closed to through traffic at different points through the summer, access will be maintained to all of the properties, Pregont said.

Some Johnson Drive prepatory work will be done this summer, but the project itself does not start until next year. Pregont said the city did not want traffic disrupted on the two parallel streets at the same time.
