Citizen calls lead to arrest of burglar in Prairie Village
Prairie Village police on Monday arrested a 35-year-old Overland Park man after two citizens called to report suspicious activity in the vicinity of 75th Street and Nall Avenue.
The first call came in just before 3:15 p.m., when a citizen reported seeing a man peering into the windows of a house and then darting into the Brush Creek bed. Shortly thereafter, another citizen called to report that the same man had entered her neighbor’s back yard in the 7400 block of Rosewood. She then heard glass breaking.
Police stopped the man as he was trying to escape the area on foot. Police confirmed that a burglary had been carried out in the area. The man, Luis Esteban Leyva, has been charged with Burglary of a Dwelling.
Residential burglaries, which had been on the decline in Prairie Village over the previous 12 months, have seen a sharp uptick in January. Last week police reported they had already responded to 10 burglaries or attempted burglaries in 2013.
