Westwood mayor asks residents for help curbing burglaries

Westwood Mayor John Yé sent a message to residents today warning them of increased burglary activity in the area and asking for help alerting law enforcement of suspicious activity:

As with most Cities during the holiday season, the Northeast Johnson County area is typically hit with an increase in burglaries and attempted break-ins. With the winter as mild as its been, this year has been particularly harsh. Westwood has seen an increase in area burglaries along with Fairway, Prairie Village, Roeland Park, KCMO as well as KCK.

Recently the Westwood Police Department interrupted a burglary in progress due to a witness making a timely 911 call. A stolen vehicle was abandoned and impounded and is currently being investigated but no arrests have been made. More burglaries have occurred since Christmas and the Police are asking the Community for their help. Extra patrols in unmarked cars have been taking place and Westwood is working with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and surrounding municipalities to find the culprits.

We need your help…

We ask that all residents be aware of their surroundings

If you see any suspicious activity, vehicles or persons, immediately contact 911 and report it

Please communicate often with neighbors on your street

While we recognize the sensitivity of bringing this to the attention of the general public, the police are tirelessly providing extra patrols for the safety our residents. Many times people who witness suspicious observations do not call in until after the fact. We request that you share this communication with all your neighbors. Your police department and Public Safety Committee feel it is more important to communicate during these times so we ask you to CALL 911 as soon as you see something your uncomfortable seeing.
