Lancers win inaugural ARC Madness tourney, sophomore named MVP
The hosts of the ARC Madness basketball tournament decided to take a few party favors for themselves.
With a 34-23 victory over Oklahoma City’s Bishop McGuinness Saturday, SM East’s boys basketball team won the first-ever installment of the public vs. private high school tournament — and several Lancers managed to snag individual honors in the process.
Sophomore Lucas Jones, who led the Lancers with 11 points Saturday, was named tournament MVP. Seniors Zach Schneider and Vance Wentz were named to the all-tournament team.
Head coach Shawn Hair said he liked what he saw as the Lancer moved through the three day tournament, even if the team got off to a slow start.
“We didn’t play great against St. James (on Thursday), but we were good enough to win,” Hair said. “The offense really came out against Bishop Kelly, and then we knew we were going to be in a dogfight against Bishop McGuinness. But we played our game and came out of it with the win.”
Hair said his senior-heavy starting roster knows how to play together.
“We’ve got great chemistry,” he said. “I’m excited to see these guys play.”
SM North lost all three games it played in the tourney, finishing eighth overall after losing 47-43 to Helias (Jefferson City) in a consolation game. SM West finished fourth overall after losing to Bishop Kelly (Tulsa) in a consolation game.
SM East next takes the court on Tuesday for a road game against Harrisonville High School.
