Westwood reviewing Walmart plans for Neighborhood Market in Apple Market space

The Walmart store coming to the Gateway development at Johnson Drive and Roe Avenue won’t be the only new Walmart coming to northeast Johnson County in the near future. The company has closed its purchase on the Apple Market property at 4701 Mission Road at the corner of Mission and 47th Street in Westwood.

The city has not issued a building permit, according to Westwood officials, but Walmart has secured the property and has submitted plans for the building which are currently being reviewed. The new store will be a Walmart Neighborhood Market. The neighborhood markets offer groceries, general merchandise and pharmaceuticals. The plans show the store will be 33,612 square feet compared to the 151,000 square foot store planned at Gateway.

The plans call for the interior of the Apple Market building to be gutted, but use the footprint of the existing building and not tear it down. Some architectural changes will be made and the parking lot is expected to be upgraded.

Walmart has city approvals for the store, but still needs plan review and the building permit before construction can begin.

The Walmart in Roeland Park is expected to close when the Gateway store opens.
