By halftime it was essentially over: With about two minutes left to play in the first half and a massive lead the Lancers pulled out their starters and seemingly claimed a spot in the playoffs for the
third fourth time under head coach Chip Sherman.
The Lancers started off the game quick, forcing the Indians to punt from their own end zone and starting their first drive with great field position. Immediately, senior Jordan Darling found Connor Rellihan on a 50 yard touchdown pass.
Down 7-0, the Indians had their only sign of hope of staying in the game on a 60-yard completion down field into the red zone. The Lancer defense stood strong, however and forced the Indians to attempt a field goal, but failed to convert and came out of the drive empty handed.
After that, the Lancers ran away with the game after an electrifying 80 yard run from senior Troy Wilkins and another touchdown from senior Sam Stewart. Up 21-0 in the first quarter, the Lancers scored twice more with rushing touchdowns from Blackburn and David Stewart.
Up 35-0, the Lancers pulled their starters. But the high octane offense wasn’t done yet. Junior Christian Blessen came into the game for Darling and was able to connect with sophomore Alec Dean before halftime, giving the Lancers a 42-0 lead at half. The Indians were able to score twice on the ground in the second half, but it was too late for a comeback and the hope of avoiding a winless season quickly faded.
With the win, the Lancers improved their record to 7-2 and clinched the fifth seed in the playoffs. They will play Olathe East in the first round, a team they previously beat 41-21 in the regular season. The winner will take on the winner of number one seed Lawrence Freestate (8-1) and number eight seed Olathe North (3-6).
