Fairway home businesses now need licenses

If you live in Fairway and you run a business out of your home, it is time to get an “occupational license,” a new requirement passed by the city council this year.

The license carries a $50 fee and is required for anyone who uses a residential property for a “primary” place of business. Someone with a home office who may have a primary business place outside the home, does not need the license. But, if the home office is the only business location, then the license is required.

The license period runs July 1 to June 30, so Fairway residents getting a license now will need to renew next July. Some types of businesses – such as charitable organizations – are exempt from the fee, but are still required to obtain the license. To get a license form click here.

The regulations pertaining to the license are found here.

And the standards on home occupations are found here.

The city has had regulations on home occupations, but this is the first time licenses have been required.
