One thing was for sure heading into the Kansas 6A girls doubles tennis finals Sunday: SM East had the best team in the state.
Indeed, two SM East doubles teams advanced to the finals by knocking off competitors from Blue Valley North and Blue Valley Northwest in Friday’s semi-final matches (the finals were moved to Saturday.
And when the final match was done, it was sisters Elizabeth and Stephanie Wilcox who prevailed over fellow Lancers Aidan Epstein and Meredith Shackleford. For Elizabeth Wilcox, the victory led to a third consecutive doubles title. She and Mollie Cooper, who graduated last year, won the doubles title in 2010 and 2011.
The strength of the doubles teams combined with solid singles play from sophomore Elizabeth Barnickel, who took third place, propelled the Lancers to their second consecutive team title. Perennial rival Blue Valley North finished in second place in the team competition, and took first in singles.
The team title is tennis coach Sue Chipman’s fourth in sixteen years.
