On the ACTs, SM East students rule. On the SATs, they appear to need a bit more school.
SM East placed third among the five Shawnee Mission high schools with an average composite of 1,789, finishing behind SM South (1,902 average composite) and SM Northwest (1,835). SM West’s average composite was 1,782. SM North’s was 1,650.
The district’s average composite was 1,795, above the state average (1,739) and national average (1,498)
In 2010, SM East’s average composite of 1,839 put it fourth in the district.
The discrepancy between SM East students’ performance on the ACTs and SATs may be explained in part by the sample size. Fewer and fewer college-bound seniors are taking the SATs these days. In 2010, only 11 percent of district seniors took the SAT compared to 68 percent who took the ACT.
