Lancers boys soccer keeps rolling, now 7-1 on the season
By margins wide and small, the SM East varsity boys soccer team just keeps finding ways to win.
The Lancers started last week’s action with a road game against Lawrence Free State. Despite keeping control of the ball for the vast majority of the first half and outshooting Free State, SM East found its first — and only — goal of the night on a cross from senior Tyler Rathbun to senior Jackson Stephen. Free State staged a late push and forced Lancer goalie GJ Melia to make a game-ending save, but the Lancers prevailed 1-0.
Back at home Thursday, the Lancers hosted Lawrence High at the SM Soccer Complex. The game was tough, with several player warnings, yellow cards, and even a red card for the Lions’ goalie, but the Lancers had little trouble pulling away.
Senior defender Matt Terry scored a career-best three goals. Seniors Christopher Watkins, Andrew Manalo and Clint Dunn had goals as well in the 6-1 Lancers win.
The team is now 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the Sunflower League. They’ll be back on the field tomorrow for a road game against league-opponent Leavenworth High.
