Countryside East ‘cones’ together for annual Ice Cream Social

Neighbors in Countryside East gather each year at Langworthy Island, named for the neighborhood developer, for ice cream and conversation. The number of young children present at the event has grown over recent years.

Neighbors in the Countryside East Homes Association gathered for the annual ice cream social Sunday evening at Langworthy Island at Hodges and 64th Terrace.

The event has been a decades-long ritual for the nearly 300 homes that lie primarily between Nall and Roe and 63rd and 67th Streets. The draw for children, besides the ice cream and desserts, is the fire truck visit each year. The neighborhood was founded in the early 1950s and was built out over the next 20 years.

Young James McLarty gets a hand from local firefighters exiting their truck during the annual Countryside East ice cream social.
