Despite a torrential downpour Friday that kept the crowds at SM North Stadium thin, the Lancers defeated the SM South Raiders in a season-opening game that demonstrated flashes of brilliance on both sides of the ball.
Perhaps on account of the rain – or nerves on the first night of the season — the Lancers came out flat in their first series, going three and out. But the defense took advantage of a bad snap by SM South, forcing a safety for the first points of the season. After that, the Lancers poured it on.
The defense kept intense pressure on the Raiders, forcing six fumbles.
And the offense showed a range of threats, with the Lancers scoring on touchdown runs from Troy Wilkins, Patrick Blackburn and quarterback Jordan Darling.
Blackburn handled the bulk of running duties for the Lancers. Darling, the much touted quarterback who was making his first start for SM East, went 9-12 for 67 yards passing.
The Lancers won 23-0.
SM East faces Olathe North, which lost to SM Northwest in its season opener,
next Friday on THURSDAY at 7 p.m.
