Silent swing: ‘Too heavy’ swingers force equipment replacement at Porter Park
What could be more idyllic than a late-summer swing in the park, with your feet to the sky, the wind blowing through your hair, all your troubles floating away?
Well, hopefully something.
Because two sets of swings at Prairie Village’s Franklin and Porter Parks are out of commission for the near future, which means you’re just going to have to wait.
And while your waiting…maybe it’s time to start thinking about shedding a couple extra pounds? Sorry to be so direct, but, according to Prairie Village public works director Bruce McNabb, the Porter Park swings, at least, are on the fritz after being used by people “heavier than they were designed for.”
“We’re looking at how the swings there were engineered,” he said. “We are concerned that the problems have come from excess weight.”
McNabb says the department is looking into alternative swing equipment that could accommodate more generously bodied swingers. At present, he said, it’s difficult to determine how long it will be before a suitable replacement is located and installed.
At Franklin Park, however, swing patrons are in luck. McNabb said a special part is on order that will fix the set and he anticipates the swings will be rocking away in a matter of weeks.
(By the way…this is our 2,000th post. We wanted to make sure we published something good and intense for the milestone).
