SureWest crews beginning installation work for residential service in Fairway
SureWest, a traditional cable provider whose services compete with Time Warner Cable, is moving into northeast Johnson County — but how far it will come remains to be seen.
Fairway residents earlier this week received a notice from the city alerting them to installation work that will be carried out by SureWest crews in the coming months. The crews will be installing cable equipment in neighborhoods throughout the city, the vast majority of which will be buried underground in city rights-of-way.
SureWest has had a franchise agreement with Fairway since 2001, but had only operated transmission and commercial services there to date. But in February, the state approved a plan allowing SureWest to begin operating residential services. A SureWest representative said the company intends to have installation for the vast majority of the city complete between Aug. 31 and Sept. 15. Residential customers will be able to purchase SureWest cable, internet and phone service as soon as the installation work is complete in their neighborhoods, he said.
Prairie Village City Administrator Quinn Bennion last week was in the final stages of preparing a letter expressing the city’s interest in having SureWest begin providing cable service to its citizens as well. The company has told Prairie Village executives are likely to make a decision about whether to move into the area this fall.
