You like Prairie Village, don’t you? Well, don’t you? Good. Then why not help spread word about the wonders of our li’l burg to the corners of the world?
Sandy Burgers, a local coordinator for Academic Year in America (AYA), a foreign exchange student placement service, is looking for three families to host students from Denmark, China and Germany for the 2012-2013 academic years. See Burgers’ pitch below:
Hi I am Sandy Burgers, a Shawnee Mission East alumni parent. Last year my husband and I hosted a foreign exchange student through Rotary International and enjoyed it so much we agreed to do it again this year. After living with these amazing students for the past two school years and meeting all of their great friends, I have decided to become a coordinator for Academic Year in America (AYA) and share the opportunity to host a student(s) from another country.
By hosting a student you and your family will develop a lifelong bond with a “son or daughter” from someplace else in the world. You will be able to share our culture with them while they share their culture with you. It is an amazing opportunity. When you agree to host a student, your family will be able to choose the student that you think will be the best match for your family. One of the most comforting things is that you will not have to go it alone. As a local coordinator with AYA I will be there every step of the way to support you and your student all year long. I will act as a liaison with the school, the student and yourself.
So if you are willing to open your heart and home to welcoming a new family member and experience a rewarding intercultural learning experience, call me and we will get together and make a dream a reality for an exchange student. Or if you would just like more information or know of somebody else who would be interested please, contact me or pass along my information. I can provide you with written information as well as answer any questions you may have. I look forward to placing a student in the home of a Shawnee Mission East area family. The students need to be here in time for school on the first day so will be flying in no later than August 10! We still need a few good homes so please contact me at 913-648-3145 or 913-787-4553 or firstname.lastname@example.org ASAP if you are willing to open your homes and hearts to host.
