Food on Friday: Aguas frescas

By Julia Westhoff

We helped host a baby shower this weekend. Bocce balls were thrown, gifts were opened, kabobs were eaten, and beverages were consumed. Since many of the attendees weren’t drinking, I wanted to come up with drinks that were a festive alternative to alcohol. Agua frescas seemed perfect – they’re slightly more exotic than your average juice, but super easy to make and fun to play around with. And they are great for parties because they’re pretty and you can make them a few days ahead of time.

The mom-to-be loved the different varieties, and those who weren’t expecting enjoyed adding a little vodka or tequila. Have fun playing around with your favorite flavors – any squishy-type fruit will work. These recipes make about 10 cups each. Check them out after the jump.

Watermelon Cucumber
10 cups cubed seeded watermelon
8 cups chopped peeled english cucumber

Puree watermelon and cucumber in a blender (this will take several batches). Place a fine mesh strainer over a large bowl or pitcher; pour mixture through sieve and collect the liquid. Discard any solids left in the sieve. Serve ice-cold

Melon
8 cups cubed cantaloupe or honeydew melon
1 1/2 cups water
1 to 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoons salt
1 quart chilled club soda or seltzer

Puree melon in batches with water in a blender. Place a fine mesh strainer over a large bowl or pitcher; pour mixture through sieve and collect the liquid. Stir in lime juice, sugar, and
1/4 tsp salt and chill. Divide among glasses and top off with club soda.

Strawberry Watermelon
Ingredients:
2 cups cold water
8 cups watermelon (rind removed), cubed
4 cups mashed strawberries
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
Juice of 1/2 lime (no more than 1 tablespoon)

Puree everything in blender and water in blender until smooth. Pour mixture through a strainer into a pitcher, forcing through most of the pulp. Chill.
