Sweating red, white and blue at VillageFest 2012
The brutal readings from the thermometer didn’t deter hundreds of moms, dads and their patriotic progeny from gathering on the Prairie Village municipal grounds for the 16th VillageFest Fourth of July celebration.
The day began with a well-attended pancake breakfast catered by Chris Cakes…:
…and was followed by a Patriotic Ceremony at the Harmon Park Pavilion, with Boy Scouts serving as the color guard and Dr. Susan Lee singing the national anthem:
The Patriotic Ceremony concluded with a flyover by five vintage planes, which approached from the south and then turned around at 63rd Street for another pass over the hundreds of spectators below:
The activities surrounding City Hall included an impressively exotic petting zoo, which featured a kangaroo, spider monkey (which, much to Olivia’s chagrin, you couldn’t pet), zebra and camel:
…music by local favorite Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” Cosgrove, who got some help from a back-up band of aspiring musicians:
…and a Headstrong for Jake Bike Rodeo, where volunteers from The University of Kansas Hospital helped properly fit 350 free bike helmets for kids:
