Happy Fourth of July! Please don’t blow up the city
Happy Fourth of July, everyone!
Just a brief public service announcement to remind everyone that, what with the ridiculously hot and dry weather, setting off your own fireworks may not be the best way to demonstrate your civic pride. In fact, it would probably pose a not-insignificant threat to you and your neighbors.
Also, it’s illegal. Fairway police chief Mike Fleming sent out a message to residents yesterday reminding them about the city ordinance banning fireworks. Johnson County on Monday put out a press release giving notice of a burn ban in all unincorporated areas of the county on account of the hot, dry, windy weather — and noted that deputies would be patrolling in search of illegal fireworks use as well. And Prairie Village police chief Wes Jordan reported after the holiday last year that his department had seen an uptick in the number of illegal fireworks calls it had to respond to.
So, if you missed last night’s fireworks at Bishop Miege, but you need your Fourth of July fix, perhaps consider heading south to Leawood City Park, where the city’s annual fireworks display kicks off at 9:45 p.m. (Free shuttle buses will be running from the parking lots along Tomahawk Creek Parkway to City Park all day starting at 10 a.m.).
