Shawnee Mission School District spokeswoman Leigh Anne Neal reports that SM East operations and maintenance personnel have examined the school’s chiller equipment and other machinery and found everything in working order. The workers were not able to detect any unusual noises being emitted from the school’s equipment.
The news essentially brings neighborhood residents searching for the source of a siren-esque background noise audible for more than a month back to square one.
Matt Gowen, a 74th Terrace resident who says the sound has been loud enough to wake up his children at night, says he thinks the hum is coming from a piece of large machinery — but still can’t figure out where.
“I spoke to a longtime friend in Lawrence who’s been selling and repairing industrial equipment for the past 25 years, and when I described the sound to him, without missing a beat he said, ‘Sounds like the motor has a bad bearing,’” he said.
