Highlands second graders plant tree in Fairway for Arbor Day
Highlands Elementary second graders got a little extra fresh air this morning in recognition of Arbor Day.
The students gathered at Peterson Park in Fairway where they took an Arbor Day-themed civics quiz administered by Mayor Jerry Wiley (Sample question: “Who is the mayor of Fairway?” Silence. One hand shoots up: “You are.” Good enough).
The students then helped plant a Burr oak, which will eventually be relocated near the home of former Fairway treasurer Bob Mapes as a way to commemorate his service to the community.
Prairie Village will hold its annual Arbor Day tree planting ceremony starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Franklin Park.
