Poker tourney honoring SM East grad who died of pancreatic cancer celebrating fifth year

Brady Stanton loved his family. He loved his dog. He loved gardening, writing and playing the guitar. And he loved his Tuesday night poker games.

So when the Briarwood, Meadowbrook and SM East grad and Prairie Village resident died in 2006 after fighting an extremely aggressive form of pancreatic cancer for four months, his friends and family decided they had to do something to honor his memory — and take a stand against the disease that took his life.

The answer: All In For a Cure, the Brady Stanton Memorial Texas Hold ‘Em Tourney.

This year, the event that raises money for the University of Kansas Cancer Center is entering its fifth year. It will be held Saturday, Feb. 4, featuring a poker tournament from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the 810 Zone on the Plaza, followed by a party starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Madrid Theatre on Main Street.

To date, the event has raised more than $500,000 for pancreatic cancer research. The money is used by the Brady Stanton Pancreatic Cancer Fund to support clinical trials research by Avarind Sugumar, MD, at The University of Kansas Cancer Center, as well as a pancreatic tissue and serum bank.
