Weltner Park renovation nearly complete, shelter remains to be installed

Renovations at Weltner Park near the State Line Shopping Center are nearing completion, with new playground equipment installed – and in use.

The $335,000 renovation began in late August in conjunction with a road project that rerouted Cambridge Street, eliminating an under-used island of park land. In addition to expanding the park’s footprint, the project included construction of a natural play area made in part from the trunks of trees cut down when crews began rerouting the road.

The contractor working on the project has had supply issues that have pushed back installation of a large shelter to the east of the playground. Prairie Village public works director Bruce McNabb said he expects the shelter to be installed before Thanksgiving.
