A look at the new ‘pocket parks’ coming to Corinth Square

Four new “pocket parks,” small developments featuring areas for rest or recreation, will be perhaps the most noticeable addition to Corinth Square as part of the plans approved by the city Tuesday night. Here’s a quick look at what each will consist of:

Northeast corner, outside current CVS location:

The centerpiece of this “node” is a two-tiered pool surrounded by a stone seating area. It was designed to facilitate foot traffic between the main shopping center facility and the new CVS location, which will be built just across the parking lot.

Northwest corner, outside Mely’s Yogurt and Ice Cream:

This pocket park was designed with the idea that families are likely to frequent this area of the shopping center. A play area featuring large boulders kids can climb on will be coupled with a natural prairie restoration area. The play area will have a padded flooring material used to mitigate the possibility of injury from falls. This is the largest of the four new mini-parks. The prairie area will have a “mowed through” path intended to give people the experience of walking through natural grasses.

Southwest corner, outside the Wild Bird Center:

The designers planned this node with the idea that a large conifer tree — which will serve as the Mayor’s Christmas Tree each year — would be the featured attraction. A 12-15 foot Norway pine will be the focal point, and will be joined by a seating area surrounded by heavy landscaping.

Southeast corner, outside Urban Table:

Designed to appeal to the more adult crowd likely to frequent Urban Table, this node features a sunken fire pit surrounded by stone and wood seating areas. Designers noted that they’ll have to cover the fire area, and said they haven’t determined the hours during which the fire cauldron would be active.
