Prairie Village signs direct residents to head for shelter from storm

Prairie Village Public Works Director Bruce McNabb showed the City Council one of the new lightning warning signs.

Anyone who witnessed the dark clouds roll in from the southwest Tuesday night will understand just how powerful electrical storms can be.

But to remind local residents of as much, Prairie Village Public Works will be posting approximately 30 signs throughout city parks.

The signs, which read, “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!” and encourage people to seek shelter in a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle, were provided by Johnson County Parks and Recreation as part of a national program.

Public Works Director Bruce McNabb said crews will post the signs in the areas of parks where city workers and volunteers don’t tend to be around to supervise activities.
